NCSC CAF Version 4

Relative to the ever-increasing cyber threat landscape, the NCSC has just launched version four of the Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF). It introduces several key updates aimed at strengthening the cyber resilience of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure (CNI). Here’s a summary of the major changes:

  • Understanding Attacker Methods and Motivations: A new section helps organisations build a deeper understanding of how attackers operate and what drives them. This aims to improve cyber risk decision-making by aligning defences with realistic threat models, giving greater focus for organisational resource.

  • Secure Software Development and Maintenance: Here it introduces guidance on ensuring that software used in essential services is developed and maintained securely. This reflects the growing importance of secure software supply chains in CNI environments, whether developed internally or procured from a third-party supplier.

  • Enhanced Security Monitoring and Threat Hunting: Updates to this section seek to improve detection capabilities and threat visibility, with an emphasis on proactive threat hunting and continuous monitoring to counter evolving attack techniques.

  • Expanded Coverage of AI-Related Cyber Risks: Whether we like it or not, AI is continuing to permeate all aspects of our lives at pace. Its therefore no surprise that version 4 of the CAF increases the coverage of these threats, highlighting the ability of AI to create more sophisticated phishing, malware or ransomware attacks and to potentially evolve attacks faster than traditional detection measures can respond. The framework now includes broader guidance on managing risks associated with AI technologies.
